The love month.
It’s February and I always think of Valentine’s Day when I think of
the month of February. I haven’t done any research on how it got its origin or
exactly how it came about. All I
know is that it’s all about paying tribute to the one or the ones that you
love--a day to let you say “I Love You” to that special woman in your life
which could include your spouse, a girlfriend, daughter, Mother or who ever
pulls on your heart strings. But did
you know that there are actually 12 other “National Days” celebrated in the
month of February? Of course we are
all familiar with Groundhog Day on Feb. 2nd, but did you know about
Thank A Mailman Day on Feb 4; Fly A Kite Day on Feb. 8th; National
Toothache Day on Feb. 9; Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday on Feb. 12th;
National Gumdrop Day on Feb. 15th; Random Acts of Kindness Day on
Feb. 17th; Love Your Pet Day on Feb. 20th;
President’s Day on Feb. 21st;
Be Humble Day on Feb. 22nd (Al Haynes takes this day off
annually) Carnival Day on Feb. 26th and International Polar Bear Day
on Feb. 27th. Lots of occasions to celebrate in February, but men
whatever you do, DO NOT FORGET Valentine’s Day and treat your special lady
like a queen. Otherwise, the rest of
the remaining months in the year 2011 will be futile. Happy Valentine’s Day to
all our Eagle 102.3 female listeners. I
hope YOUR day will be special!

February, Valentine’s Day. As a kid growing up in
Wedowee Rexall Drugs was about the only place you could find a card in
Wedowee, and there weren’t many to choose from like there are today. And,
lord, it was a busy place. People coming and going. Hard to shop for THE card,
especially a Valentine Card. At eleven, a guy just doesn’t need an audience
when it comes to matters of the heart. So, after nonchalantly passing by the
card rack several times, taking a quick glance at the Valentine Cards when I
thought no one was looking, I finally made my decision and started up to the
counter with it just as several of my friends and their mothers came in the
front door.
I tried to look invisible as I handed Mr. Burson the card and dug for the
change I’d been saving up. But, what was Mr. Burson doing? “Oh my God,
he’s opening it up right when my friends and their mothers are walking up!”
“Just ring it up and take my money”, I’m thinking, but NOOOO! “He’s
READING IT!”........”OUT LOUD, for Christ’s sake!!!”
All eyes turn to me as Mr. Burson asks, “This the one you wanted? Must
be a special young lady.” All I
could think was, “They’re gonna know. I’ll never be able to show my face
back at the secret hideout in Mr. Q. Wright’s pasture ever again. They’re
gonna make fun of me…..and THEY’LL tell HER!”
“Valentine?”, I said. “No, I must have picked up the wrong card. I
was looking for a birthday card for my mother!”
I grabbed THE card from his hand, ran back to the card rack, replaced THE
card, grabbed a card from the birthday section and ran back to Mr. Burson, paid
him and as quickly as I could made a fast exit from the drug store.
That little blonde-haired girl never did learn how special she was to me.

As I sit here
and think about the month of February, I can’t help but think about 2
different things…. 1. the end of a very successful deer season at my house (of
which I am very thankful for) and 2. My “Popdaddy’s” birthday which would
have been February 14th. He
played such a key role in my life….me being the hunter and most importantly
the person I am today that I would love to take this opportunity to send a big
Happy Birthday up to him!
February also brings to mind NASCAR and here at the station we are busy getting things ready for the Bud Shootout on February 12th. So if you don’t have your racing helmet on yet you better get it on and buckle up…this could be an interesting ride!

Well
another busy month here. I know I
said I would try and have a better newsletter this month, but I let time slip up
on me and did it again. I’m going
to be listening to all of our stations a lot more, if that’s possible, with
the start of Nascar and the Braves. Well
next month I guarantee a better newsletter, not as good as the great Al
Haynes’s and Lamar Dulin’s newsletters, but none the less better than the
last couple of months.
