Lamar Special Report # 1

I'm the new kid on the block, joining the Eagle's Nest Crew in June of this year.  Learning a new way of doing things since leaving radio in 1997 to start a small TV station has been challenging but fun.  The crew here at Eagle 102.3 has gone overboard to help me fit in and to get me on track.  My radio days started right out of La Grange High School in 1965 when I enrolled in a radio broadcasting school in Colorado . A few months later I was in the Air Force and was out of broadcasting until 1975.  I joined up with a radio station in Thomaston, Ga. and worked there part time and full time for the next 22 years doing at little bit of everything from calling play by play, to reporting election returns, selling advertising, gathering and writing news to D. J. ing.  I've always been journalistic by nature and had a nose for news--I guess another way to put it is that I have just been "nosey".  I've enjoyed my time here at WELR/WLAG and my goal is to present the news to our listeners as accurately and as timely as possible without a bias, because we want our listeners to be informed of what's going on around them.

Kim Special Report # 2

Hi Yall!  Kim Frank Here, the creator of the News Letter your reading and the mother of two of the greatest children in the world.  This is one of the many things I assist with to make the stations the very best they can be for YOU our Sponsors and listeners.

During Football Season at Troup High’s home games you can catch me tailgating out in front of Callaway Stadium.  It would be great if each and every one of you would take a minute and come by introduce yourself.  We have great hot wings provided DJ’s Wings & Things and refreshing Callaway Blue Water.

As the production assistant I assure that some of the programs you enjoy listening to air on our stations from our FM stations 102.3 & 96.9 to the AM stations 1240 & 1360.   As well as assisting with special events, interviews and commercial spots.

As the Administrative Assistant I wear many hats; one to include the web master.  I am responsible for adding the information you find on our webpage at www.eagle1023.com.  Our webpage is updated daily so don’t miss a day surfing by to check it out.

AL Special Report # 3

Our nightly news is often filled with stories of police officers coming under fire from a felon, injured in a shooting, even being killed chasing a fleeing suspect. It most often happens far away from the safety of our own communities.  But, when it hits close to home, it elicits a totally different reaction. We know these officers and their families. We go to ballgames with them, our kids go to school together, we worship together. The realities of what they face every time they put on that uniform then comes home to us. These men and women are the buffers between us and the otherworld. They are our protectors. They come to our aid, placing themselves between us and danger. When one of them is hurt or killed it affects us.

Sadly, we have had several incidents over the course of the last year where we have had a member of our local law enforcement communities severely injured or killed  protecting us….from us.

In September of last year, Chambers County Deputy Sgt. Shannon Rollins was shot by a domestic violence suspect in Lanett. Barely a month later, Randolph County Deputy Donnie Grant was severely injured when a suspect in a domestic violence case ran over him following a traffic stop.  Just this past month, on two successive days, Lee County Deputy James Anderson was killed when a suspect he had just stopped on a routine traffic violation ran him down with his car, and Sgt. Jason Freeman of the Clay County Special Response Team had his right hand severed by a mentally unstable suspect wielding a bush-axe.

There have been other incidents involving law enforcement officers in the surrounding area in recent history. The point is, these men and women are, in fact, placing their lives on the line for US, each and every time they suit up. It seems cliché, but it’s the truth. They never know when they answer a call if it will be their last. How many of us could live with that thought everyday?

When you get the chance, tell a police officer thanks for the job he or she does. They don’t hear that often, and they deserve better.

Robin Special Report # 4

My name is Robin Floyd and I’ve worked for Eagle’s Nest, Inc. for 10+ years.

I live in Roanoke , AL with my husband (of 28 yrs), Rick and our Furbabies.

My job is with the Traffic Department . . . but I don’t fly in the helicopter.   ; )

I enter the sales contracts turned in by our Salespeople into our computer system to place the commercial content in rotation with the COUNTRY MUSIC we play on WELR-FM (102.3) and with the ESPN SPORTS programming on WLAG-AM  (1240) / WLAG-FM (96.9) / WELR-AM (1360).  I really enjoy my work and I must say, there is rarely a dull moment!         I also answer the phone, take music request, take messages, etc. at the Roanoke Studio.

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my Mama, spending time with my Hubby and Furbabies and working in my yard.  Oh yeah, I love surfing the Web, it is like having the world at you fingertips!

Dr. Don Special Report # 5

Football season is off and running and now that we are half way through the season it appears the Handley Tigers will be the team to beat in their region. We have had some great football on the air so far this season with Handley, Wadley, Randolph County and Woodland . As usual, our broadcast crew, Mike Fisher, Billy Lane and myself have been treated to some wonderful hospitality on Friday nights. The delicious food keeps my guys going during a long night of football and we really do appreciate all the kind gestures around the county. Speaking of the Eagle Sports Crew, we welcome Taylor Jones to the Friday night line-up. Taylor is a senior at Handley High School and has always been interested in Sports Broadcasting. Taylor is assisting Stump on the sidelines answering the Eagle Sports Linc and providing our listeners with scores. Taylor is doing a great job for us and we expect to be watching him on ESPN someday soon.

 Jim Special Report # 7

This monthly newsletter is something we have talked about for a long time.  Kim Frank has taken on this project and I’m sure she will have it going in fine style in no time.

Here’s some history on Eagle’s Nest Stations;

As most of you know Eagle’s Nest Inc. started in Roanoke, AL in 1988 with the purchase of WELR-FM 102.3 and WELR-AM’ 1360 in a very small studio on Main Street.  Soon after the purchase we filed with the FCC for a 25000 watt power increase for WELR-FM.  After the FCC approved the power increase we built a new 500 ft transmit tower between Roanoke and LaGrange, and became a regional radio station covering all of East Alabama and West Georgia .

In 1992 we were able to purchase one of the oldest stations in the State of Georgia WLAG-AM along with it building and property in Downtown LaGrange.

In 1999 Eagle Nest Inc. built a new 4000 sq ft building on Highway 431 just outside of Roanoke , AL .  The very next year we were able to totally remodel WLAG-AM’s building on Broome Street , in LaGrange and add a studio for WELR-FM in that building.

Eagle’s Nest Inc. has always tried to stay ahead of the curve on the latest technology…next month we will talk about voice over IP, station formats and whats on 96.9 mhz.
